RIIERR205D - Apply initial response first aid



This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to respond effectively to workplace emergencies and deliver initial first aid until professional medical assistance arrives. Designed for workers in the coal and metalliferous mining industries, it covers the practical skills and knowledge required to administer first aid in a range of emergency situations.

Participants will learn how to assess a casualty’s vital signs and physical condition, manage and monitor their condition, and provide essential care while awaiting medical assistance. The course includes the implementation of appropriate hygiene measures and the application of first aid procedures for common workplace injuries, including non-life-threatening bleeding, burns, sprains, strains, and envenomation (snake or spider bites).

This nationally recognised training meets workplace safety requirements and aligns with WHS/OHS regulations and industry standards. It includes recording a casualty’s condition, monitoring changes, documenting first aid management and responses, and effectively communicating these details to emergency services or relieving personnel.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 5 Hours

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Students must provide and wear protective footwear/safety shoes and comfortable, practical clothing during practical sessions and assessments.

Online study options:  The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Performance tasks and Practical scenarios: 

  • Simulated scenario 1 – Provide initial response first aid (Selection of a scenario where the student has no prior knowledge of the casualty’s condition prior to starting treatment)
  • Simulated scenario 2 – Provide initial response first aid

Documentation – Complete the first aid kit content checklist and an Incident Report Form.

Theory assessment  A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions.
