PUAFIR324 - Render hazardous materials incidents safe


This accredited course involves the skills and knowledge required to safely combat incidents involving hazardous materials.  Individuals will gain the skills and knowledge required to respond to incidents involving hazardous materials.  Furthermore, they will participate in scenarios and tasks and learn how to identify and assess hazards and risks, contribute to the development, implementation and review of the plan constructed to mitigate the risks they pose to the public and the environment.

Hazardous materials incident is a generic term used to refer to an incident involving any hazardous materials based on physico-chemical, chemical, biological or radiological properties that pose an unreasonable risk to risk to life, property or the environment.  This includes dangerous goods, goods too dangerous to be transported and hazardous chemicals. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 31 Hours

Holding the pre-requisite unit PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit 

Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills to respond to incidents involving hazardous materials

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

This certificate does not require renewal

Practical Performance Tasks and Scenarios:

  • Chemical spill near waterway and complete an incident report form
  • Explosive material near waterway and complete an incident report form

Documentation – The student must complete the following documentation:

  • Hazardous materials incident plan review form

Theory assessment -   A written assessment consisting of short-answer and multiple-choice questions.
